We have been working hard on our line -up of classes. We are improving our beginning level instruction classes for knitting and crocheting and now offer them in a series of classes. Please keep checking back to see what has been added!
Monterey Yarn appreciates our students using materials purchased at the shop in our classes! To register for a class the fee must be paid. Student number is limited in all classes to provide adequate attention for participants.
Learn the most basic concepts of knitting including casting on, binding off, the knit stitch and more in 1 two- hour session. The class fee includes a set of bamboo knitting needles. The knitter in you is about to be born! If you prefer a day time class call the store at (920)884-5258. We'll put you in touch with an instructor for other scheduling options.
Review the elements presented in 101 and learn the purl stitch. Students will be introduced to several of the basic stitch patterns including stockinette, ribbing, and seed. The instructor will teach many other basic concepts and provide ideas for projects. The class is presented in 1 session. Prerequisite: knitting skills presented in Knitting I01.
Step to the next level in knitting by learning how to shape and understand your knitting. Skills introduced in this class include increasing, decreasing, fixing mistakes, and gauge. The instructor will reinforce and introduce other knitting concepts as well as provide basic project ideas. The class is presented in 1 session. Prerequisite: knitting skills presented in 101 and 102.
Finish off your basic knitting knowledge by learning how to knit in the round on circular and double-pointed needles. Lots of other knitting tidbits will be shared with students including project ideas. Once the knitting skills presented in the beginning series are mastered you are ready to take on the world of knitting! You are going to love it!
Learn the fundamentals of crocheting in this basic class. Techniques presented include: single crochet, half double crochet, stitch variations, and much much more. The instructor will also provide project ideas to practice newly acquired skills.
Continue developing your crochet skills by learning double crochet, triple crochet, changing colors, reading patterns, and much more. The instructor will provide project ideas to practice newly acquired skills.
Crochet another beautiful classic hat in a two session class. The hat can be embellished in a number of ways. Come into the shop to see and appreicate the beauty of this piece! Crochet 101 and 102 skills are a prerequisite for this intermediate level class.
Gain confidence and skill in sewing seams, picking up stitches, etc. on on a project that is ready to be assembled. Limit of 4 students per class. Additional appointment times are available by request.
Are you interested in learning different knitting techniques and stitch patterns? Bonnie (former owner of the Shaggy Sheep yarn shop in Manitowoc) has developed a beautiful twelve square afgan pattern that includes bobbles, entrelac, lace, cables, dropped stitches, and slipped stitches. Two squares will be presented in each class along with instruction to seam it together. Take all six classes for a special price or sign up for the individual sessions you are interested in. Knitting 101 and 102 skills are prerequisites for successful participation in this class.
The entrelac technique at first seems complicated, but before too long you will be knitting a fascinating scarf. Students will also learn additional skills such as a knitted cast on, cable cast on and knitting back backwards. This is a one-session class that runs three hours. The pattern was designed by the instructor and is included in the class fee.

Do you have a "UFO" (unfinished object) hiding in your closet or want to learn something new? This class was designed to meet a variety of needs. It provides an opportunity to work one-on-one with any of our talented teachers. If you are stuck on a project, would like to learn how to put a garment together, want to know how to knit in the round, or have any other knitting need, sign up for an hour session and get one giant step closer to finishing what you started and enriching your knitting knowledge! We are excited to offer this jam-packed technique class to make a beautiful and warm mitten. The class will cover provisional cast-on, entrelac knitting in the round, and incorporating a mitten lining. Students will need to have some entrelac and circular knitting experience for this project. This class meets four evenings.
Thrummed mittens are fleece-stuffed and very warm. These mittens have twisted bits of roving knitted right into the fabric. The ends of the roving are inside of the mitten and iwll form a warm matted lining with use. Experience knitting mittens is required. This is a one session class.
Learn to knit these quick warm mittens on large double-pointed needles. They are done in a jiffy and make great gifts. Many lovely yarn combinations are available in the shop. Knitting 101, 102, and 103 skills are required. This is a one session 2 hour class. Call the shop if you are interested in a November class!
Learn how to make a beautiful pair of socks utilizing two circular needles. The class is composed of 3 sessions. The first meeting lasts for 1 hour and the remaining two sessions will be scheduled with participants that evening. Prerequiste skills: Basic skills presented in Knitting 101, 102, and 103.
Do you know how to knit a sock but are interested in customizing the fit and learning about other forms of sock architecture? This class will walk the student through Cat Bordhi's book New Pathways for Sock Knitters and learn the basic concepts by knitting a small sock in class. Between class meetings students will be challenged to apply the concepts by knitting a wearable sized sock. This class will meet four Monday evenings in all and purchase of the book is required (available at the shop) in addition to the class fee. Attendance at the first meeting is an absolute must to participate in the class and is one hour longer than the remaining three sessions.
Knit a beauiful classic piece that uses mosaic knitting techniques. In addiition, students will learn to read a slip stitch chart and how to increase and decrease with slip stitches. This project is presented in a four session format. Prerequisite skills for the class include those listed for Knitting 101, 102, 103, as well as some general garment knitting experience.

This is an especially professional looking way of finishing a piece such as a cardigan band or the Fan the Flame Mitten (see above). This is a one session technique class.

Crochet this beautiful sweater that is a colorful feast for the eyes. Stop in the shop to see this stunning piece! The skills introduced include adapting a pattern for a custom fit and overall garment shaping. Crochet 101 and 102 skills are necessary for success in this class. Some experience with crocheting and pattern reading are also necessary. This is a three session class. The first class date is listed and the other dates will be determined by the participants.
